The ceiling-height constraint is the key filter

Below that, the rack platform bottom drops too low for comfortable vehicle parking, and a standard SUV or van may not clear the underside of the rack. If your garage ceiling is 8 feet or below — which is standard in residential construction built before the 1990s — an overhead rack may technically fit, but the clearance is tight enough that wall shelving is the safer recommendation based on clearance guidelines from rack manufacturers.
